Essential Oils for a Healthier Home

It took me a little over 2 years to really try Essential oils for the first time.

You may call me stubborn, and you would be right. I honestly thought people were overselling their benefits and that it was just another fad that would be gone in the next year.

I was wrong. (And I don’t admit that often.) Here’s what changed my mind: a simple body scrub.

Yup. You heard that right.

I have always loved beauty products, so when my stepmom gifted be a sugar scrub for Christmas I was pumped. After I used it, I texted her, “OMG That scrub was amazing. My skin has never felt so soft! Did you sneak your hippy dippy oils into it?” And of course she had.

After testing out some more DIY recipes, asking a million questions, and doing some research, I made a commitment to improving the overall wellness in my home and life.

There are 3 ways to use essential oils: aromatically, topically, and internally.


When inhaling, it takes 22 seconds for an oil to reach the brain. The only way to reach limbic area of the brain is through smell, making them helpful for people wanting emotional support.

Diffusing purifies the air and makes your home smell good without chemicals. Of course, my favorite oil to diffuse is Purification, but I also love diffusing Oola Grow and Balance, Envision, and a combo of Lavendar and Cedarwood at night.

There are many different types of diffusers! There are ultrasonic/atomizing diffusers, bracelets, and necklaces.


Essential oil molecules are tiny and are rapidly absorbed by the skin. When you apply an oil to the skin, it almost seems to disappear into the body.

When applied topically, it takes 2-3 minutes for an oil to reach the bloodstream and 20 minutes to affect every cell in the body. Oils are metabolized within 2½ hours.

Some favorite places to apply oils are wrists, behind the ears, neck, temples, stomach, or the bottoms of the feet. You can dilute the oils with a carrier oil, such as almond or coconut oil, or apply them neat (straight to the skin).

I absolutely love adding a few drops of Lemon Vitality into my water throughout the day.  Just make sure to use glass or stainless steel when drinking essential oils in water. Oils can break down plastic.
